Drool

So Nathan has always been a drooler. We thought he would be an early teether because of all the drool. I believe it started around 6 weeks old, and has just increased since then.

We have been encouraged to get this looked into, to make sure everything is okay.

Doing a search, I came across an article from Dr. Sears. ~ you can go to the link to see the whole thing, I'm just including excerpts.

"Infants and children sometimes exhibit certain normal and harmless behaviors that are nonetheless nuisances -- I refer to these as "quirks." Excessive drooling is a very common quirk, and in fact, excessive saliva production can be healthy. Saliva bathes the teeth and gums, washing away accumulated food and bacteria. The enzymes in saliva also help break down the carbohydrates in food, operating as a head start in the digestive process. In addition, saliva is a natural intestinal lubricant: Infants commonly suffer from gastroesophageal reflux (regurgitation of the acidic stomach contents into the esophagus); saliva lubricates the lining of the esophagus and helps neutralize the acidity. It also contains a healthy substance called epidural growth factor, which helps the intestinal lining mature.

Since your grandson is still in the teething stage, you should expect excess drooling over the next six months, or until all his teeth are in. Here are some home remedies you can use to prevent the sometimes irritating effects of excess saliva."

Apparently, his drooling is perfectly fine. In fact, he's probably healthier for it.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

I know, today has been a day of fairly serious posts. I can't even begin to apologize, because this is just part of who I am. I just hope I don't lose you all! lol

I receive newsletters from Eating Well and love the information they send. Lots of recipes and such.

Today their newsletter included information about High Fructose Corn Syrup. There's been some new research, and apparently HFCS can contain Mercury. Lovely! I'm so glad that I read labels and ban the nasty stuff.

Goings on

It's been a fun filled couple of days. (did I convince you??)

The last week or so, Nathan has been seriously working on cutting his I teeth. This kid really is a trooper. He doesn't get fevers, he doesn't even really get cranky when teething. The only thing he does get is diahhrea (yeah, I've said that word too much lately). Anyhow, his appetite has been fine and everything has seemed normal.

We went in for regular 12 month check up on Thursday. They took some blood from his finger to check some levels and such. I was told it was all normal at 12 month. Doctor came in, and was looking him over. Asked if everything was okay, I said yes... mentioned the pooh and subsequent rash (which he also rarely gets), but no worries, all seemed well.

Then the nurse came in with the blood test results. Doctor got quiet and read intently. I hate that by the way! One other time a doctor did that, and I wound up in the hospital. Anyhow, she said everything is normal, Nathan was just extremely dehydrated. To the point that she wanted to send us to the hospital. Since he had no outward signs of it, she decided to send us home, with orders to hydrate him. She also said to give lots of thick solids like mashed potatoes. Apparently solids help you absorb the liquid. Good to know.

I went to the store & got two kinds of electrolyte drinks and headed home, close to tears. I felt horrible. We spent the rest of the day putting "cup" in his hand, full of salty goodness.

The next morning we went in, he was weighed and had gained a full pound!! His levels were good and all was well. Doctor said no dairy for a week, and lots of water all long as diarrhea continues. ((sigh))

I'm learning so much as a mom. That no matter how much you think you know, a kid can throw you a curve ball.

We spent tonight playing, laughing and being grateful for a completely healthy year.
