Goals vs. Resolutions

It's that time of year when we hear people talking about New Year's Resolutions. In years past, I have attempted to make these stupid things. Like so many other people, I fail miserably almost as soon as I speak them. Why? They tend to be very vague and big picture.

Resolutions I have heard already:

1. Lose weight
2. spend more time with my family
3. change the world
4. get out of debt
5. run in a marathon

Seriously? How are you going to even go about doing these things? There is no game plan with these, this is usually as far as they go. Then they sit looming over you for the rest of the year and you feel like a big fat failure!

Instead Goals look more like this: (these are mine, actually)

1. Lose 40 pounds in the next 6 months
*How?
a. eat breakfast every morning
b. walk around the block every afternoon
c. cook a healthier dinner 3 times a week
d. weigh in every Friday Morning, need to lose at least 2 pounds a week.

2. Have a more organized home.
*How?
a. clean desk daily
b. put away laundry as soon as it comes out of dryer
c. spend 15 minutes a day doing quick de-clutter

3. Have a closer relationship with God.
*How?
a. Stop going to computer first in morning, instead read Bible
b. read one Christian non-fiction book a month

4. Build my sewing business ~ 20 items listed on etsy by April
*How?
a. have a better sewing area (DONE!)
b. spend 3 hours per week sewing to sell
c. find information about local craft fairs

When you make goals, the idea is to write down how to do them. Set a time line for each step to the goal. Put it on your calendar, fridge or where ever you will see it.

Revisit and update your goals every couple of months. What seems realistic in January may not be come April. Things in life can change.

Tell People about your goals (like on a blog! ha), accountability is a wonderful motivator.

Have Grace for yourself. You are a human, and not perfect.

You definitly think about this the right way. i think i may need to borrow and modify your lose weight goal and sewing goal for myself. those look managable and realistic for me. I love reading your blog, keep up the good work, Codi

Wow...never thought about doing it that way...you're so smart :)

I hope you are able to do it! We have found that most of the craft fairs and such around here in AR are in the fall unless you do festivals. I've never done a festival so I don't know how that would be. Once you do one craft fair and meet other crafters they open a whole new door to others. We even had people brings around invitations to others at the first one we did. If you are wanting to venture out to other states let me know and I'll let you know what's going on around Arkansas.
